The San Francisco 49ers have made a surprise announcement at quarterback ahead of their Week 1 opener against the New York Jets.
Per ESPN’s Nick Wagoner, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan announced that Brandon Allen will be the team’s No. 2 quarterback behind starter Brock Purdy. Josh Dobbs, who signed a one-year deal with the 49ers in free agency, is the third-stringer.
The announcement is a bit surprising, considering that Allen didn’t play at all as the No. 3 quarterback behind Purdy and Sam Darnold.
Dobbs made 12 starts last year (split with the Arizona Cardinals and Minnesota Vikings) and showed some promise with a 62.8 completion percentage for 2,464 passing yards and 13 touchdowns against 10 interceptions.
But the San Francisco 49ers would rather Allen be ready to take over the offense before Dobbs if the occasion calls for it. The 32-year-old has made nine career starts (three with the Denver Broncos and six with the Cincinnati Bengals), and has thrown for 1,611 yards and 10 touchdowns against six interceptions.

The 49ers are coming off a heartbreaking loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime of Super Bowl 58. It was by far the most gut-wrenching loss for the 49ers in the Kyle Shanahan era, and they have lost two Super Bowls and as many NFC Championship Games over the last five years.
San Francisco 49ers Will Be Tested Early vs. Jets
Considering that Aaron Rodgers only played a few snaps in his Jets’ debut last year, Monday’s clash in the Bay Area is essentially his first game with New York. And it promised to be a dandy.
Rodgers had many epic clashes with the 49ers during his tenure with the Green Bay Packers, including four playoff showdowns that San Francisco won (2012, 2012, 2019 and 2021). The four-time league MVP will be hungry and motivated on Monday, so it’s a great first challenge for the reigning NFC champions.
