Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell completed 19 of 31 passes for 202 yards and had a touchdown, an interception, and a rushing touchdown in Week 1.
He had a solid game against the Arizona Cardinals, but it did not come easy on what was a painful and ugly day due to Mother Nature.
It only took one quarter for things to get out of hand as the Arizona Cardinals and Washington Commanders started fighting. Howell got hit by Cardinals linebacker Kyzir White after the whistle, and it resulted in a 15-yard penalty and a fight between the two teams.
That wasn’t the only time the Cardinals appeared to be trying to hurt Howell on this day.
One play that has been gaining traction is a Cardinals lineman putting Howell’s entire head between his legs and slamming him to the ground. It appears no flag was thrown on that action.

The Washington Commanders will have to balance the development of quarterback Sam Howell with competing for a playoff spot this season.
A win is a win, but the Commanders were expected to easily handle the inferior Cardinals and they did not do that.
The Commanders struggled to pull away, never leading by more than seven while only outgaining the Cardinals by 38 yards and won the time of possession battle by a little less than three minutes. That type of play will not result in wins against better opponents.
Heading into Week 2, the focus is on getting better and finding a way to start 2-0. Howell will be under center for the Commanders in their Week 2 matchup with the Denver Broncos.
