Only the Panthers.
After a goal line stand by the defense against the New York Giants, QB Sam Darnold rewarded the Panthers defense for their effort by letting the Giants score anyway when he threw the football and hit his own center in the head.
That is what we like to call a safety and gave the Giants 2 points.
It was an easy intentional grounding call on the Panthers quarterback, as no receiver was even in the area. Darnold knew the safety was inevitable, so he just tried to throw the ball anywhere and get away with it. Unfortunately for him, in this instance he wasn’t able to get away with it.
The safety is one of the few bright spots during what has been an incredibly disappointing season for the Giants defense. One year after nearly carrying their team to an NFC East title, the unit has struggled mightily. They came into today’s game ranked 27th in yards allowed per game, and 29th in points against.
