The New Orleans Saints are adding a former 1,000-yard rusher to their backfield to help their late-season postseason push.
Per Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football and Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 in Houston, the Saints are signing veteran running back James Robinson, who was let go from the Green Bay Packers’ practice squad last week.
The 25-year-old Robinson was one of the top surprises of the 2020 NFL season. As an undrafted rookie out of Illinois State, Robinson rushed for 1,070 yards and seven touchdowns on the NFL’s worst team, the 1-15 Jacksonville Jaguars.
Robinson was threatening for another 1,000-yard season as a sophomore in 2021, but injuries caused him to miss three games. Robinson finished the campaign with 767 rushing yards, eight rushing scores and 989 yards of offense.
After losing his starting job to 2021 first-round pick Travis Etienne in 2022 (Etienne missed his entire rookie year to injury), Robinson was sent to the New York Jets ahead of the 2022 trade deadline. Robinson finished the year with 425 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

He signed with the New England Patriots this past offseason but was let go because of injury concerns. Robinson appeared in one game for the Packers earlier this year, but he saw only one carry and a reception for minus-two yards on one target.
Robinson joins a New Orleans backfield led by do-it-all star Alvin Kamara and veteran Jamaal Williams, who’s had a tough first season with the Saints after signing a $12 million deal in free agency.
