The NFL world is in mourning following the shocking news of Ryan Mallett’s drowning death in Florida this week.
The former Patriots, Texans, and Ravens quarterback went under the water while swimming just off the Panhandle coast on Tuesday afternoon and, despite the best efforts of local police and lifeguards, they weren’t able to get him out in time.
Mallett is said to have been unresponsive after he was pulled out of the water and was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital.
Bodycam footage of the scene of the tragic incident has since surfaced online, with the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office releasing it in a Facebook post. You could check it out right below:
It’s understood that the 35-year-old was trying to swim to a second sandbar around 150 meters from the shore. While riptides were initially reported to be what caused his death, Okaloosa Sheriff Eric Aden has countered the reports with claims that there was no indication of dangerous conditions at the time of the drowning and there were no red-flag warnings.
“The tragic loss of life, it’s always difficult when we lose a tourist or resident here, but we have no indication here of any dangerous conditions out there,” he noted.

“The entire Okaloosa County, as well as Destin, we’re not under red flags or double red flags despite some of the misperceptions out there,” he continued after the bodycam footage was released of the incident on Wednesday.
