Ryan Leaf is likely best known as being one of the biggest draft busts in NFL history after he was argued as possibly being better than Peyton Manning coming out of college. He then saw his life spiral out of control due to drugs, and even spending time in prison on burglary, theft and drug charges in Montana. He was released from prison in 2014.
Ryan Leaf’s journey was nowhere near perfect, but it has seemingly landed in a pretty good place.
Taking to Twitter on Thursday, the former NFL quarterback took time to reflect on his past while revealing that he has now been sober for eight years.
“8 years ago today I woke up on the floor of a prison cell…” Leaf wrote. “You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending!! There is Hope!! #soberlife #8yearssober”
Leaf has turned his life around to the point that he is now a respected football analyst for ESPN and also does broadcast work for the Pac-12 Network.
Nearly 22 years after he placed 3rd in the Heisman Trophy voting, Leaf was inducted into the Washington State Cougars Hall of Fame in September 2019.
