Depending on your age, you may remember a time when Leigh Steinberg was once the most powerful agent in the NFL. He represented the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft eight times — more than any other agent in history.
Ryan Leaf was one of those clients when he was coming out of college. His behavior did the Colts a huge favor some 24 years ago when he allegedly was told by his agent to blow off a pre-draft meeting with the Colts, as he published a book years ago. The plan was supposedly intended to infuriate former Colts head coach Jim Mora.
Indianapolis ended up drafting Peyton Manning.
While working for “The Rich Eisen Show” Leaf finally denied those cliams from that book, but did not offer an explanation as to why missed a meeting with the Colts.
He said he and his representatives “just missed it.”
“That was not the case. I know you’re selling books, I get it,” Leaf said. “We just missed it. We missed it. We didn’t really comment on it. Bill Polian and Jim Mora Sr. were incredibly upset. My meeting with (former Chargers GM) Bobby Beathard and the Chargers went really well. I assume they couldn’t have been happy with the fact that I came in overweight, but I immediately got a trainer down in Newport Beach and I went to work.”
Leaf was taken by the Chargers at No. 2.

“I liked the idea of going to San Diego, of course, because of everything that it meant,” he said. “It meant money, California, beach babes, all of that, and that’s what I wanted. We let Indianapolis know that I was not interested.”
His career would make him the most notirious bust in league history.
Leaf’s career was just bad both on and off the field. He threw for just 3,666 yards in his entire career, and threw twice as many picks as he did touchdowns.
