Warren Moon has shared a brutal take on Russell Wilson’s struggles in a Denver Broncos uniform this season.
Wilson has been having a torrid campaign for the 3-9 Broncos, who are set for a clash with the Kansas City Chiefs this Sunday. So it’s pretty likely that his season is about to get even worse. He’s reported to have already lost the locker room in Denver.
Wilson spent nine seasons playing for the Seattle Seahawks, helping them win the Super Bowl in his second year. He was traded to the Broncos this March in a move said to have been initiated by the player himself. Russell denied setting things in motion, though he says the decision was a mutual one.
Well, it hasn’t been working out for Wilson so far. And Moon, who was considered his mentor and a bit of an idol, has refused to come to his defense. The Hall of Fame quarterback worked as a radio analyst for the Seahawks for the first seven years of Russell’s career there, having played a year in Seattle himself.
“Everybody wants to blame the coach,” Moon said, per Outkick. “But this is what Russell wanted. He wanted to be a pocket quarterback. That’s what he has always wanted.”
Too Short for The Pocket
Moon also pointed out that the 5-10 Wilson is simply too short to succeed as a pocket QB.

“(Seattle) wanted to have him in the pocket about 60 percent of the time and then move him around the rest,” Moon continued. “All that stuff about, ‘Let Russ cook’ is really him talking about wanting to be in the pocket all the time. He can’t do that. He’s too short. You have to get him out in space a lot of the time so he can see everything.
“Saints also did a really good job of getting guards and a center who were good and could keep the pocket clean when (Brees) stepped up to throw. Seattle used Russell on read-option plays much of the time to keep Wilson moving around.
“You have to get Russ moving around so that he can get out into space so he can see things better. You know from watching, He’s not going to be able to see the middle of the field. When you watch him throw deep, it’s rarely deep down the middle. He also doesn’t see it very well and now that he doesn’t move as well as he used to, he doesn’t like going.”
Moon was the first black QB to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of fame and is pretty close to Wilson, who was drafted by Seattle as a third-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.
The Hall of Famer said he has immense respect for Wilson’s ability as a quarterback, however, the latter isn’t playing to his strengths.
Wilson made the Pro Bowl nine times in his first 10 pro seasons. His move to Denver was expected to get the Broncos back into postseason affairs, yet they’re hopeless at the bottom of the AFC West while he’s having the worst spell of his career with a regrettable 83.5 rating.
