The Denver Broncos’ decision to bench Russell Wilson could really hurt them in the offseason as the quarterback isn’t expected to do them any favors.
While the team has made it clear that Wilson isn’t their man, he could make it difficult to get the QB they want.
According to the player, the Broncos approached him during their bye week earlier in the season and requested that he alter his contract to get them off the hook for injury-related guarantees. His refusal to acquiesce led to him being benched for the final two games of the season.
The Broncos could cut the QB after June 1 and spread his $80 million cap hit across several years. They could also attempt a trade, yet there is a full no-trade clause in Wilson’s contract and, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, he’s unlikely to waive it.
Russ would change his stance if he could control where he lands, but that would also take away any leverage the team might have.
Meanwhile, the NFLPA is investigating the team’s decision to bench the veteran signal-caller, which could also throw a spoke in the wheel.

While Denver gave Russ everything he wanted when he was acquired, Sean Payton was nowhere in the picture. And, with the coach keen on a new QB, they will likely take a hit on his contract if they can’t find a trade partner.
