Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson has offered his first public comments since the team announced that he’ll be benched for the club’s final two games.
In a surprise move, the Broncos have decided to sit their $245 million quarterback for their final two games, even though they remain in playoff contention. Backup Jarrett Stidham will start Sunday’s must-win Week 17 contest against the Los Angeles Chargers.
On his X/Twitter page, Wilson broke his silence by writing the following message, “God’s got me. Looking forward to what’s next.”
Regardless of what the Broncos say, it’s rather obvious that the decision to sit Wilson is purely a financial-based one. As NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero noted, the Broncos would owe Wilson $37 million guaranteed in 2025 if he suffered an injury.
The Broncos acquired Wilson via trade with the Seattle Seahawks in 2022. Before his Denver debut, the nine-time Pro Bowler and future Hall of Famer signed a five-year extension worth $245 million.

After a disappointing first season with the Broncos, Wilson has turned in a nice bounce-back campaign under head coach Sean Payton. Wilson has completed 66.4 percent of his pass attempts for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions to go along with 341 rushing yards and three rushing scores.
Stidham also started the Las Vegas Raiders’ final two games last season after the club opted to bench Derek Carr. Though he lost both games, Stidham racked up 656 passing yards and four touchdowns to go along with three interceptions.
