Matthew Stafford has likely played his last snap in a Detroit Lions uniform.
The longtime Lions starting quarterback has informed the team that he would like to make a fresh start, according to ESPN.
Former NFL scout and Bay Area podcast host John Middlekauff told KNBR that the San Francisco 49ers could be in the running for acquiring his services.
He added that he would deal the No. 12 pick for Stafford.
“But I think it’s fair to say that, at this point in time, it’s just time for a change there (for the 49ers),” Middlekauff continued (h/t 49ers Web Zone). “It’d be an easy one. Getting pick 12 for Matt Stafford would be a pretty good deal, and then you could trade Jimmy and basically just transfer the money to Matt Stafford, a guy that, until the end of last season, has been very, very durable his entire career.”
A trade would end a 12-year tenure for Stafford with the Lions, who took him first overall in the 2009 draft
