Three notable NFL quarterbacks have been floated as potential targets for the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason.
Last month, head coach Mike Tomlin announced that the team would bring in “competition” for quarterback Kenny Pickett. Backup Mitch Trubisky was released last week, and third-stringer Mason Rudolph is a pending free agent.
During last week’s appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show”, ESPN’s Adam Schefter mentioned Ryan Tannehill (Tennessee Titans), Russell Wilson (Denver Broncos) and Justin Fields (Chicago Bears) as potential offseason targets for the Steelers.
Schefter even added that Tomlin himself “is a big fan of” Fields. The Bears are expected to trade the 2021 first-round pick and use the No. 1 selection (via the Carolina Panthers) on USC’s Caleb Williams.
Tannehill is a pending free agent and most certainly won’t return to Tennessee after losing his starting job to rookie Will Levis. The Broncos, meanwhile, are widely expected to cut Wilson and send him into free agency.

Rudolph finished 2023 as Pittsburgh’s starting QB and won all three starts, leading them to a 10-7 finish and playoff appearance. However, the Steelers were easily ousted by the Buffalo Bills on Wild Card Weekend.
Though Pickett is 14-10-0 as Pittsburgh’s starting QB through two seasons, he has just 13 touchdowns, as many interceptions and a mediocre 78.8 career QB rating. Clearly, some competition for the 2022 first-round pick is required.
