It has become increasingly evident that Kirk Cousins likely needs a chance of scenery. That change might see him headed to the Bay Area.
According to sports reporter Evan Massey, the 49ers want to move on from Jimmy Garoppolo and he says he’s told that Kirk Cousins “is a name to keep an eye on, adding that if the Vikings are open to dealing Cousins, “San Francisco will push hard to acquire him.”
Cousins is 33-years-old and due for a $31 million cap hit on the Vikings in 2021, with him having a $45 million paycheck waiting for him in 2022. According to The Athletic, if Cousins is traded his cap hit for a new team would be $21 million in 2021 and $35 million in 2022.
Jimmy Garopollo’s contract carries only a $2.8 million cap hit.
The San Francisco 49ers are one year removed from playing in the Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs, but they took a major step back in 2020 with so many injuries to key players. Even still, the quarterback play was already shaky for a team that plays in a division that has Russell Wilson, Kyler Murray, and now Matt Stafford.
