The Carolina Panthers reportedly are willing to go all in for Deshaun Watson.
During an appearance Monday on ESPN’s “NFL Live,” Panthers reporter David Newton tabbed them as a potential landing spot and mapped out what the franchise would be willing to include in a trade package for the superstar quarterback.
“The Panthers will do whatever it takes to get Deshaun Watson, and that includes giving up three first-round draft picks and (running back) Christian McCaffrey,” Newton said on ESPN’s NFL Live today, via 247Sports. ” Owner David Tepper wants to win a Super Bowl. He’s made that clear.
He understand it takes a marquee quarterback to do that. If you look at recent history, outside of (Kansas City Chiefs quarterback) Patrick Mahomes, the quickest way to do that is to trade for a marquee quarterback and not draft one in the first round. Just ask Tampa Bay.”
The only issue with Tepper’s advice is that the Tampa Bay Bucs signed Tom Brady in free agency, and he then convinced Rob Gronkowski to come out of retirement. Everything fell perfectly into place for them.
This particular proposal is one of the few where a QB is not being sent back in return, but getting a dynamic player like McCaffrey back could sway the team into pulling the trigger.
The Panthers signed McCaffrey to a four-year contract extension worth $64 million before last season, but 2020 wasn’t good to him as he dealt with injuries all year.
