A top NFC team has been floated as a potential destination for former New Orleans Saints star wide receiver Michael Thomas.
The Saints released Michael Thomas earlier this offseason after another season derailed by injuries. Thomas, who was limited to 10 games from 2020 to 2022, appeared in only 10 contests last season.
ESPN’s Matt Bowen recently analyzed the best landing spots for the top remaining NFL free agents. For the 2019 Offensive Player of the Year and three-time Pro Bowler, Bowen suggested the Dallas Cowboys as his next destination:
“When healthy, Thomas can still uncover and work multiple levels of the field. However, the injury concerns are legit, as the 31-year-old wide receiver has played in just 20 games over the past four seasons. And while Thomas could wait until after camps start to find the best landing spot, let’s focus on Dallas as a possibility; he could make an impact there on a one-year deal.
In Mike McCarthy’s offense, Thomas could compete with Jalen Tolbert for the No. 3 role alongside CeeDee Lamb and Brandin Cooks. He could align as a boundary X and show his ability to work the seams out of the slot. He caught 39 passes in 2023 for 448 yards and a score.”
The Cowboys have been surprisingly quiet this offseason, even though owner Jerry Jones promised back in January that his team would be “all-in”. They haven’t made any notable splashes via trade or free agency, but there are still plenty of impactful players available on the open market that could help Dallas in their Super Bowl quest.

That list includes Michael Thomas, who put up a stellar stat line with 39 passes for 448 yards and a touchdown in the 10 games he saw last season. And though he only appeared in three contests during the 2022 campaign, Thomas still finished with as many TD receptions.
Before injuries piled up on Thomas, he was arguably the NFL’s best wide receiver. He exceeded the 90-catch and 1,100-yard marks every year from 2016 to 2019, setting a single-season record with 149 receptions in the latter year.
Cowboys Should Take A Chance On Michael Thomas
Having spent two months on the open market now, it’s obvious that Michael Thomas won’t command too much money in free agency. If anything else, he’ll likely be keen to join a high-powered offense that will allow him to reset his free agent market for next year.
The Cowboys’ passing game has been too reliant on superstar CeeDee Lamb for a while now. Though Brandin Cooks is a fine No. 2 option, the Cowboys could use a third playmaker to open up the passing game.
So yes, the Cowboys are an ideal landing spot for Thomas at this stage.
