The New York Jets have plenty of tasks on their offseason to-do list as they try to bounce back from another disappointing season.
There was plenty of hype around the Jets heading into 2023, all thanks to the arrival of four-time league MVP Aaron Rodgers via trade with the Green Bay Packers. Unfortunately, the Jets were doomed once Rodgers suffered a season-ending Achilles tear just minutes into his debut against the Buffalo Bills in Week 1.
New York used three different quarterbacks to salvage their season without Rodgers: Zach Wilson, Tim Boyle and Trevor Siemian. They combined for 11 touchdowns and 15 interceptions, with all three QBs averaging under 190 passing yards per game.
ESPN’s Rich Cimini dove into the Jets’ need to bring in more quarterback insurance behind Rodgers. There, Cimini floated former Pro Bowler Ryan Tannehill and journeyman backup Jacoby Brissett as possible targets:
“Tannehill, 35, is the best option because he’s a proven winner (81-70 as a starter) and has a background with Jets passing-game coordinator Todd Downing, formerly the Titans’ offensive coordinator. But he might be able to snag a starting job elsewhere. If that falls through, the Jets should be at the front of the line for his services…
Brissett (18-30 as a starter) is a steady player who protects the ball, but he’s not going to generate a lot of big plays. He made $8 million last season, so he won’t come cheaply.”
The Jets are expected to trade or cut Wilson, who simply hasn’t come along since entering the NFL as the No. 2 overall pick in 2021.

One way or another, New York has to bring in somebody with valuable experience like Tannehill or Brissett. Another intriguing option would be to draft a quarterback in one of the early rounds and groom him to eventually succeed the 40-year-old Rodgers in Gotham.
The bottom line is that the Jets cannot go into 2024 with the same set of backups they had for Rodgers last year.
