If the Denver Broncos move on from quarterback Russell Wilson (as expected), they could target two big-named signal-callers in April’s NFL Draft, according to an NFL insider.
The Broncos benched Wilson for their final two games of 2023 due to the injury guarantees in his contract. If Wilson got injured, the Broncos would have had to pay the nine-time Pro Bowler $37 million in guaranteed money for 2025.
Responding to a fan’s question on X/Twitter, Broncos insider Benjamin Allbright of KOA Colorado suggested that Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy and Oregon’s Bo Nix could be targets for Denver.
Allbright noted that “both fit what Sean Payton looks for” and even suggested that Jimmy Garoppolo (under contract with the Las Vegas Raiders), could be a bridge QB until McCarthy gets the reins.
The Broncos hold the No. 12 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, putting them in excellent position to draft a signal-caller in the QB-heavy 2024 class.

USC’s Caleb Williams and North Carolina’s Drake Maye will be long gone by the time it’s Denver’s turn to pick, but McCarthy, Nix, Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. and USC’s Jayden Daniels could be available for Sean Payton and company.
Garoppolo signed a three-year deal with the Raiders in 2023 free agency but was benched in favor of Aidan O’Connell after a Week 8 loss to the Detroit Lions. Chances are high that the new Raiders’ brass will look to trade or cut Garoppolo, who struggled with seven touchdowns and nine interceptions in seven games.
