There is speculation going around that the Los Angeles Chargers will cut one of their top offensive weapons this offseason.
The Chargers have already made one big splash this offseason, hiring Jim Harbaugh as their new head coach just weeks after he led the Michigan Wolverines to a national championship. Harbaugh and new GM Joe Hortiz now must work together in rebuilding the roster accordingly.
Brad Spielberger of Pro Football Focus listed veteran wide receiver Mike Williams as a cut candidate for the Chargers, noting that such a move would save the team a whopping $20 million in cap space:
“The Chargers have a strong case as the NFL team in the worst financial situation heading into the offseason, so several tough decisions await. An unfortunate ACL tear could push them to move on from wideout Mike Williams, a former top-10 pick, as he’s one of four players with a 2024 cap hit north of $30 million — none of whom are quarterback Justin Herbert.”
Many believed the Chargers would cut Pro Bowl wideout Keenan Allen last year, but he agreed to restructure his deal. The same offer could come to Williams, who was Justin Herbert’s favorite target when healthy and on the field.
Williams has struggled to stay healthy throughout his career, but he has a pair of 1,000-yard seasons under his belt. In 2019, Williams led the NFL with 20.4 yards per catch, having recorded 49 receptions on 1,001 yards.

The 6-foot-4 wideout is a game-changer when healthy, but the Bolts may ultimately decide to save money and get younger at the WR position. At any rate, it’ll be fascinating to see what the new regime decides on.
Aside from Williams, Allen, Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack have also been mentioned as potential cut candidates for the Bolts. Ultimately, Harbaugh and Hortiz must decide if they want to try to win with this ageing albeit ultra-talented roster, or if they want to shake it up altogether.
