The Los Angeles Chargers are seemingly moving on from longtime QB Philip Rivers and will now have a gaping hole at the position, since they don’t currently have a viable franchise QB left on the roster to takeover as they move into a new stadium.
One quarterback that could fill that spot and is expected to be healthy and on the trading block is Cam Newton.
Bleacher Report insider Matt Miller recently touched on several topics in a recent article that included there being “buzz” surrounding a trade for Newton involving the Los Angeles Chargers.
“All signs from league sources indicate the team will draft a signal-caller—either Justin Herbert or Tua Tagovailoa—in the first round, but within the last three days there have been a number of unsolicited calls and texts about a trade for Cam Newton.”
The Athletic’s Sheil Kapadia doubled down on that suggestion as he saw it as a perfect landing spot.
“We’ll see whether Matt Rhule wants Newton back, but at this point, it seems likely he’s played his last game in Carolina. If Newton is available, and the Chargers move on from Rivers, he could make a lot of sense as their next quarterback. The Chargers were not as bad as their 5-11 record last year suggests. They were 2-9 in one-possession games. They’ve got a talented defense and can open their new stadium with the promise of Newton firing lasers to Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. Newton’s health is obviously a huge question, but the Chargers with him at quarterback could be a fun, entertaining team.”
In nine seasons with the Panthers — Newton has amassed 29,041 passing yards, 182 touchdowns and 108 interceptions. His dual threat of being a runner has racked up 4,806 yards and 58 touchdowns on 934 carries.
