Following an epic 20-year run with the New England Patriots, Tom Brady was prepared to go to a team that he loved from his childhood.
Just two days after officially becoming a free agent in March 2020, “TB12” signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and since then, has added another Pro Bowl honor to his credit and more importantly, his seventh Super Bowl ring.
Coming off of a loss in Super Bowl LIV to the Kansas City Chiefs in February 2020, the San Francisco 49ers were looking to make a big splash and reel in Brady that offseason.
It seems head coach Kyle Shanahan wanted the team to go out and sign Brady, but other people in the building decided to talk him out of it.
Former NFL executive Mike Lombardi, who worked as an assistant to Bill Belichick in both Cleveland and New England, said on “The Pat McAfee Show” that Shanahan wanted to chase after both Brady and Mac Jones.
The team ultimately settled on Trey Lance, whom San Francisco selected with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

“A year earlier, Kyle wanted to sign Tom Brady, and the resistance factor within the building said, ‘No, no, no. We’re not doing that,’” said Lombardi. “So Kyle gets back, and he wants Mac Jones, and all of a sudden the Twitter momentum, ‘You can’t take Mac Jones there. He’s not good enough. You can’t hire Al Pacino as Michael Corleone. You can’t do this, you can’t do that.’ He gets worn down.”
Lance started just two games last season, and was rather unimpressive, completing 57.7 percent of his passes. Still, the 49ers are poised to go with him as their Week 1 starter.
