Four interesting teams could be landing spots for New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, according to a prominent NFL insider.
Owner Robert Kraft is expected to make a decision on Belichick’s future in the days following the Week 18 finale against the New York Jets. With the Patriots (5-11) suffering their worst record in 23 years, many expect Kraft to move on from the legendary head coach.
If that happens, Belichick will certainly draw plenty of interest around the league. Regarding possible fits, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer mentioned the Carolina Panthers, Dallas Cowboys, Las Vegas Raiders and Los Angeles Chargers as possible fits:
“The Chargers make the most football sense. The Panthers and Dallas Cowboys might have the owners motivated to take a swing. The Raiders have some connection there, too (Mark Davis’s dad almost hired Belichick in 1999), but it’s hard to see them going back to the Patriots well. Which, of course, illustrates how the list of suitors, if Belichick’s out in New England and determined to coach elsewhere, probably won’t be very long.”
It has been widely suggested (even by Breer in the same piece here) that Dallas may fire Mike McCarthy if they don’t go on a deep postseason run. The Carolina Panthers (Frank Reich) and Los Angeles Chargers (Brandon Staley) fired their head coaches in the second half of the regular season.
So those are two definite opens that need to be filled. The Raiders fired Josh McDaniels (a longtime assistant of Belichick’s in New England) midseason and promoted Antonio Pierce to the interim role. Given the Raiders’ improvement under Pierce, he’s widely expected to garner consideration for the permanent HC position.

The Washington Commanders will likely be in the market for a new head coach as well, as they’re expected to part ways with Ron Rivera following a third straight non-playoff season.
