It looks as though the Denver Broncos are planning to move on from Pro Bowl signal-caller Russell Wilson after this season.
On Wednesday, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the Broncos are considering the option of benching Wilson for their final two games as a way to save “financial flexibility.” Rapoport and colleague Tom Pelissero noted that if Wilson were to suffer a serious injury, that would tack on $37 million in guaranteed money for 2025.
Following the report from Rapoport, FOX Sports’ Jason McIntyre floated the Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons as possible landing spots for the nine-time Pro Bowler, noting that he’d have the luxury of playing in a weak division.
The Las Vegas Raiders faced an awfully similar issue with Derek Carr last year. The team benched Carr for their final two games because of concerns that a Carr injury would complicate a potential trade. The longtime Raider wound up being released before signing with the New Orleans Saints.

Wilson has shown considerable improvement under new head coach Sean Payton, throwing for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns and only eight interceptions. Up until Sunday’s stunning loss to the New England Patriots, the Broncos were in playoff contention in December for the first time since 2016.
But it appears as though the Broncos are ready to punt on the season and build towards 2024. Coach Payton and GM George Paton will now get to evaluate the offense for two more weeks before deciding the best course of action for next year.
