Washington Football Team quarterback Alex Smith exited Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers late in the first half with a right leg injury. Smith sat out the second half of Washington’s win over San Francisco as he was replaced by Dwayne Haskins, who was able to guide the team to the victory.
After the game, Smith was diagnosed with a mild calf strain, per Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.
Washington Football Team coach Ron Rivera said Smith was experiencing tightness and muscle soreness when pushing off on the leg, according to Megan Plain of WTKR. However, Rivera added that Smith could have played if it were an emergency.
Smith, who faced amputation and nearly died after breaking his right leg in 2018, made his return to the NFL this season after a long road to recovery.
He has gone 3-1 as the starter and has the team atop the NFC East.
