The Washington Commanders could officially be eliminated from the playoffs today. And somehow, that’s news to their head coach Ron Rivera.
Following the team’s embarrassing 24-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns, a reporter asked Commanders head coach Ron Rivera whether he would consider giving rookie quarterback Sam Howell a look in week 18 if Washington is eliminated today.
The question seemed to confuse Rivera, who responded by saying, “We can be eliminated?” That’s when the reporter informed Riverboat Ron that a Green Bay Packers victory against the Vikings during the later slate would be the final nail in the coffin of the Commanders’ season.
It’s pretty crazy that a head coach in the NFL (who’s making millions of dollars) doesn’t even know his own team’s playoff scenarios. Totally inexcusable.
The Commanders currently sit at 7-8-1 this season after today’s loss, while the Detroit Lions are in the NFC’s final wild card spot at 8-8. Meanwhile, the Packers are 7-8 and currently beating the Vikings. Should they win and move to 8-8 on the year, it would be impossible for the Commanders to pass both teams in the standings, as the Packers and Lions face off against each other in week 18.
