NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has sounded off on the controversial penalty that has had everyone talking since Sunday.
The call on Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney is still being debated several days later, though head coach Andy Reid has changed his stance.
Toney was rightly flagged for offside after scoring what would have been the go-ahead touchdown against the Buffalo Bills in the Week 14 matchup. The Chiefs went on to lose the game, much to the frustration of Reid and Patrick Mahomes, who took shots at the officials in their respective press conferences in the aftermath.
The referee in question, Carl Cheffers, explained that the offside did not require a warning as it was that egregious, even blocking the officials’ view of the football. According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, Goodell has since backed him up.
This is pretty strange from the commissioner given that there’s no doubt that the call was correct, while Reid has since digressed and Mahomes has also offered an apology on the back of his meltdown and subsequent criticism.
Meanwhile, the Chiefs are heading into Week 15 with an 8-5 record. They have the New England Patriots up next.
