DirecTV has held the rights to the NFL Sunday Ticket package since its inception in 1994, but that will all be changing after the 2022 season has concluded. The only remaining question is which provider will be taking it on going forward.
During a press conference this week following the ownership meeting in Texas, Commissioner Roger Goodell provided ownership with a “very brief” update.
“I would say it’s in a very critical point for us,” Goodell said. “We’ve had a lot of interest in this, and we continue to. Our decisions are not based on timelines. They’re based on it being the best outcome with the best party.”
Apple remains the frontrunner for the package while Disney, Amazon, and Google have also been vying for Sunday Ticket in recent months. DirecTV pays $1.5 billion per season under its current deal but the league is looking for as much as $3 billion annually with a new deal.
The only issue going forward over an NFL-Apple deal for Sunday Ticket is how Apple would distribute it. Apple had sought to put it on its Apple TV+ service. That is only a $6.99 fee, which is a hell of a discount from the nearly $300 charged per season by DirecTV.
