NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has teased a change to the league’s schedule ahead of Sunday’s Super Bowl.
Goodell spoke to reporters at his annual state of the league press conference on Wednesday and had quite a bit to say. The 63-year-old defended NFL referees with claims that officiating has never been better, while also touching on minority hirings around the league.
On another note, the NFL boss told the press he wouldn’t be surprised if Thursday night games started being flexed in the same manner as Sunday night games.
Players are unlikely to welcome this. Thursday night games are already tough enough as is. Teams get less rest and have to change up their routines, so making the schedule flexible might be considered a punishment for teams playing in surprise Thursday night fixtures.
On the other hand, it would be great for fans as some of this season’s Thursday night games were hard to watch. Switching games is likely to make it more enjoyable, but there’s also the annoyance of buying a ticket and then learning the game has been switched to a whole other day.
Should the NFL actually make this change, they would have to give teams and fans proper notice. It would take some doing.
