NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has offered brief comment on a potential change to the league’s schedule.
Goodell held a press conference with reporters on Tuesday, during which he discussed several topics, including Tom Brady’s plans to purchase a stake in the Las Vegas Raiders and how his role at FOX might affect them.
He touched on the tampering investigations regarding the Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles over the signings of Kirk Cousins and Saquon Barkley.
Goodell told the media the probes are still ongoing.
Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the Commissioner’s presser centered on the possibility of an 18-game regular season.
Roger Goodell Says An 18-Game NFL Season Is Certainly Possible
The NFL went from 16 games to 17 three years ago. Since then, there has been a push to add another game to the schedule. Goodell revealed that there is no active discourse regarding this, but he noted that it would have to be a trade-off for a preseason game, which would likely mean the preseason schedule would be cut from three games to two.

Players would probably welcome an extra game as they would be playing less non-competitive fixtures. But it will likely leave retired players disgruntled as their 16-game records would be under even more threat.
Given the potential revenue boost of adding more games to the NFL schedule, who’s to say that the league might not eliminate the preseason altogether and play a 20-game schedule?
For now, an 18-game season is a distant dream. But at least it’s not off the table.
