Zach Wilson had one of the best statistical games of his young NFL career in the New York Jets’ 23-20 loss to Patrick Mahomes and the defending NFL champion Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night.
He was widely praised for his effort, mainly because he has had a rough start to his career that has been filled him being booed and benched.
Wilson completed a career-best 28 passes out of 39 for 245 yards and two touchdowns in the loss, with a career-high QB rating of 105.2.
When interviewing Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones, former NFL safety and current TV analyst Rodney Harrison asked if Wilson was better in the Kansas City win than what he had seen on tape. He tried his best to bait him into speaking ill of Wilson.
“Was Zach better tonight than what you anticipated he would be, watching on tape? You can be honest,” Harrison said.
“Honestly? If I’m being completely honest, we knew it was going to be a battle,” Jones said. “He’s continuing to get better, week in and week out. He continues to lead, week in and week out.”
“But watching that tape, man, you’ve got to look at this dude and say, ‘Aw, he is garbage. We should really tear him apart,'” Harrison said.
As it turns out, Harrison would eventually do the right thing and apologize to Zach Wilson. Head coach Robert Saleh said Harrison “Handled things the right way this morning” and that Harrison is a good man.

“Rodney, this morning, handled everything the right way,” Saleh said. “Rodney’s a good man. Whatever he’s getting for that is water under the bridge. I think he’s handled exactly the way he’s supposed to.”
Harrison played 15 years at safety for the San Diego Chargers and New England Patriots, so it was shocking to see a commentator get so personal with a player, and try to get his opponent to join in trashing him too.
Wilson has struggled and heard plenty of criticism, so he really does not need a former player jumping in on him after he had a good game.
