New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft had a blunt explanation for his decision to part ways with head coach Bill Belichick.
The team announced a mutual split between team and coach this Thursday, with both Kraft and Belichick speaking to reporters thereafter.
Belichick, who was the longest-tenured coach in the NFL, having filled said position for 24 years, thanked the organization, fans, and Kraft for the opportunity to achieve all he went on to accomplish as a head coach.
As for Kraft, he had plenty of praise for his former head coach but offered a terse confession on his exit.
“What’s gone on here the last 3-4 years isn’t what we want. Our job to fix it,” he said, per ESPN’s Mike Reiss.
While Belichick is undoubtedly one of the best coaches in NFL history and many consider him to be the greatest ever, the Pats haven’t been that good since Tom Brady left.

The team has missed out on the playoffs in three of the four seasons since he’s been gone and hasn’t won a playoff game since then either.
“I thank Coach Bill for his hard work and dedication,” Kraft added before admitting, “It’ll be difficult to see him in a cutoff hoodie on (another) sideline.”
