ESPN analyst Robert Griffin III pitched himself as a fill-in starting quarterback for one team for the rest of the 2023 season.
These days, Robert Griffin III is an NFL and college football analyst for ESPN. He would like to change those titles for a few months.
Amid the season-ending injury to Deshaun Watson, the former NFL quarterback revealed his interest in the team on his podcast, RG3 and The Ones.
“The Browns should sign me as their starting quarterback,” said Griffin.
Griffin argued he has learned from the mistakes he made during his playing career. He also described the play of Watson during Cleveland’s Week 10 win as being that of a “game manager,” a role he thinks he’s more than capable of filling.
“Deshaun Watson went 14-for-14 in the second half against the Baltimore Ravens… Of those 14 passes, there weren’t really any of them that you would say were $230 million worthy passes. All they needed him to do was manage the game…” said Griffin. “Well, guess what? I can do that. I can go out there and manage a game for the Cleveland Browns and help them go on the Super Bowl run that they want to go on.”

Griffin claimed to still be able to run a 4.3 second 40-yard dash and throw the ball 80 yards.
The former No. 2 overall pick of the 2012 NFL Draft had a stellar rookie season but an unfortunate injury caused him to have surgery to repair a torn ACL and LCL during the offseason following his first year. His career has never been the same ever since.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Griffin signed a broadcasting agreement with ESPN in 2021, although there is an out in his contract if the opportunity to return to the NFL comes up.
In the meantime, the Browns are expected to go with rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson under center.
