Maybe honesty isn’t always the best policy as Ryan Tannehill is finding out this week. The Tennessee Titans quarterback has been taking heat Wednesday for comments he made Tuesday about Liberty quarterback Malik Willis.
Tannehill said of Willis, a third-round pick by the Titans in the 2022 NFL Draft, “I don’t think it’s my job to mentor him. But if he learns from me along the way, that’s a great thing.”
Among those objecting to Tannehill’s me-first attitude was free-agent quarterback Robert Griffin III.
Taking to Twitter on Wednesday, the former Rookie of the Year pointed out that while it’s not in Tannehill’s “job description” to mentor Willis, it is his job to lead the entire team.
“It’s not in @ryantannehill1‘s job description to mentor @malikwillis. But as the Quarterback of the team, it is YOUR JOB to lead everybody. Saying you won’t help a young player adds unneeded tension to the locker room. Help the next guy and let your play decide who the future is,” Griffin wrote.
Griffin also called out Tannehill for letting his ego get in the way of his leadership.

The Tennessee Titans are well aware of how much of an opportunity they cost themselves in their 19-16 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in the divisional round of the NFL playoffs. Coming off that loss with the trade of AJ Brown and these comments by Tannehill is not the way the AFC South team thought their offseason would be going.
Tannehill said the Titans didn’t notify him that they were selecting Willis with the No. 86 pick, although he said he texted Willis soon after the team made the selection. The veteran quarterback said he understands how the league works and welcomes the competition.
On top of everything else, Tannehill wasn’t in attendance for the voluntary portion of offseason team activities because of renovations at his home.
