Robert Griffin III sent out a heartwarming message on social media following his unexpected firing from ESPN.
On Thursday, Andrew Marchand of The Athletic reported that ESPN was firing Robert Griffin III and Sam Ponde in cost-cutting moves. Marchand noted that both were making over seven figures on their contracts and that RG3 was signed for two more years.
In a post on X/Twitter, Griffin sent out a thank you message to his ESPN coworkers and the fans who supported him during his three-year run with the company. The post featured a video of RG3 running out onto the field at Memorial Stadium for the Clemson Tigers-North Carolina Tar Heels game last November:
Griffin had faced an uncertain future at the Worldwide Leader in Sports following Jason Kelce’s hiring. ESPN brought in the former Philadelphia Eagles center to work on their “Monday Night Countdown” program, with Kelce taking over RG3’s spot.
Robert Griffin III kept the option to return to football open when he began working for ESPN in 2021. Having last played an NFL snap in 2020, it’s clear that the 2011 Heisman Trophy winner’s playing career is over.

Griffin was drafted second overall by Washington in 2012, right after the Indianapolis Colts used the top pick on Andrew Luck. In his rookie year, RG3 led the club to an NFC East division crown and took home OROY honors.
Unfortunately, a string of injuries quickly derailed Griffin’s once-promising career. He last played for the Baltimore Ravens in 2020, serving as a backup to Lamar Jackson.
Robert Griffin III Should Land A New Job Soon
Griffin enjoyed immediate success as an analyst on ESPN, not to mention his strong following on his popular “RG3 and The Ones” podcast. At only 34 years of age, Griffin is a rising star in the NFL broadcasting industry and should find a new gig sooner rather than later.
