Things have gotten ugly enough in New England to the point where many fans and analysts believe that Bill Belichick should be let go after this season.
The greatest head coach of all-time is now in year four of the post-Tom Brady era, and the results aren’t pretty. New England is 26-29 since 2020, with one winning season (2021) and zero playoff victories over that period.
On top of that, New England’s 31-3 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday marked Belichick’s worst defeat as a coach. Indeed, the sky is quickly falling in Foxborough.
ESPN analyst and former Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin wasted no time calling out Belichick during a segment of “Get Up” (h/t Mike Fisher Of Sports Illustrated). RG3 ripped Belichick for “coaching malpractice” and for failing quarterback Mac Jones:
“Bill Belichick’s one of the greatest coaches we’ve ever seen. He’s arguably the greatest coach of all time in NFL history, but he really overthought this, and it’s hurt Mac Jones permanently…That is, to me, the epitome of coaching malpractice.”
“Mac Jones is not a creator, but they’re asking him to create. So that starts with the scheme…In 2021, had the No. 6 offense in the NFL. Who was his coordinator? Josh McDaniels, one of the best …we’ve ever seen in this league. Now you move forward to this year, and they have one of the worst offenses in the league…For me, this comes down to coaching.”
Jones was the best rookie quarterback of 2021, leading New England to a 10-7 record and AFC Wild Card appearance. Just when it looked like Belichick had quickly rebuilt his team into a playoff contender, the Pats slipped to 8-9 last year, due largely to his awful decision to make Matt Patricia (a defensive coach) and Joe Judge (a special teams coach) the co-offensive play-callers.

Sunday’s Week 5 home game against the New Orleans Saints is essentially a must-win for the Patriots. A loss will only further fuel the calls for owner Robert Kraft to move on from the greatest coach in NFL history.
