The Chicago Bears will never stop hearing about the field goal that wasn’t when former kicker Cody Parkey cemented his place as a legendary choker when he double-doinked a 43-yard field goal off the upright and then the crossbar to lose the game and send the Philadelphia Eagles to the NFC Divisional game.
Parkey has since been cut.
Former Bears kicker Robbie Gould, who was cut by the team before the 2016 season, had been excelling since his departure from the franchise. Since his dismissal, Gould leads the NFL in field goal percentage, going a combined 82-for-85 on field goals, while Bears kickers have gone a cumulative 60-for-79 over the last three years, the absolute worst in the NFL.
Just when Bears thought they could move past that terrible playoff moment, Gould decided to open it right back up by knocking down a 43-yard field goal just for fun.
Ouch.
The Bears recently had a kicking competition at rookie camp, where 8 kickers kicked from 43 yards and were absolutely terrible from that distance.
