Rob Gronkowski’s retirement may be bad news for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a whole, but it could be a very good thing for one of the team’s wideouts, according to bettors.
According to Caesars Sports columnist Max Meyer, Gronk’s retirement announcement has resulted in a “surge of action” on Bucs wideout Mike Evans to lead the NFL in receiving yards. In fact, it has caused Evans’ odds to drop from 40-1 all the way to 20-1.
Meyer provides even more details in his article:
Ever since Rob Gronkowski announced his retirement last Tuesday (June 21), Evans has accumulated 39% of the total number of tickets and 44% of the total dollars wagered to lead the NFL in receiving yards. That is more than double the tickets and double the handle compared to any other player over that span. Overall, Evans is second in dollars (12%) and fourth in tickets (7%).
According to Meyer, Ceedee Lamb of the Dallas Cowboys is currently the leader for total number of tickets (12%) and total dollars wagered (19%). His odds are listed at 16-1. As for the largest single bet so far, that was a $2,000 wager that was placed on Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce at 35-1 odds.
Gronkowski had previously retired following the 2018 season, after his Patriots captured their sixth Super Bowl. But he returned in 2020 with Tampa, where he and Tom Brady won their fourth and seventh Super Bowls, respectively.
