We now have two former Patriots players that have spoken on rumors of Lamar Jackson possibly joining the Patriots. Last week, Asante Samuel, who won two Super Bowls while playing for New England from 2003 to 2007, tweeted on Thursday: “Lamar Jackson, my brother trust me you don’t want to play for [Patriots coach Bill] Belichick.”
Jackson, who announced Monday that he had requested a trade from the Baltimore Ravens, was linked to the Patriots this week.
Rob Gronkowski played under head coach Bill Belichick for nine seasons in the NFL so he knows a little about what he likes and what he might do.
Appearing on the “Up & Adams” show with Kay Adams, the retired tight end talked about the possibility of Lamar Jackson wearing a Patriots uniform. Admitting, “I don’t think that’s gonna go down at all.”
“I think he would be a good fit in a way,” Gronkowski said of Jackson during an appearance on Up And Adams. “At the same time, I don’t think he would be a good fit… I feel like coach Belichick would always kind of dream of a quarterback on top of, not just a pocket passer, but a Lamar Jackson type, the one that can be able to run the ball as well. I feel like he likes those types of quarterbacks from all the times he talked about them in meetings. So, that’s why it would be a good fit.”
Jackson requested a trade from the Baltimore Ravens on March 2nd, but the team would then put him on the non-exclusive franchise tag without ever leaking the fact that he wanted out from the franchise.

His tag allows him to negotiate with other teams. Jackson and the Ravens failed to reach a deal after nearly two years of negotiations because the former MVP is looking for a fully guaranteed contract in the range of Deshaun Watson’s $230 million, fully guaranteed deal.
The Baltimore Ravens didn’t help themselves much as it pertains to the ongoing situation including quarterback Lamar Jackson. However, all signs point to him playing for the team in 2023 unless he makes a power move and decides to sit out.
