Rihanna might not have agreed to perform at halftime during Super Bowl 57 had it not been for the performance from the game’s 56th iteration in 2022.
Fans were thrilled to have witness her act as she had already turned down an offer from the NFL just a few seasons ago as a means of expressing solidarity with Colin Kaepernick and his protest against racial inequality in 2016.
This time around, the Barbadian star obliged the league, and her appearance brought in over 28 million viewers. The 34-year-old has since revealed what got her to change her mind.
“There’s still a lot of mending to be done in my eyes, but it’s powerful to break those doors and have representation at such a high, high level and a consistent level,” she told Vogue UK as part of a cover story, via PaperMag.com. “Two Super Bowls back-to-back, you know, representing the urban community, globally. It is powerful. It sends a really strong message.”
So it appears Rihanna might not have been the one to do this year’s show had last year’s not been hip-hop centric.
The 2022 Super Bowl saw the likes of Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Eminem, and Kendrick Lamar team up with Mary J. Blige for a West Coast affair.

Rihanna’s, though, came with a bonus as the outing led to a pregnancy reveal.
