ESPN’s Rex Ryan is certain he will become the next head coach of the New York Jets.
Ryan, the favorite for the job after spending six years as the team’s head coach from 2009 to 2014, will have an interview this Tuesday and is confident he will emerge as the new man in charge.
The 62-year-old told ESPN Radio’s ‘DiPietro & Rothenberg’ as much on Monday, suggesting there’s no one else better suited for the post.
“Absolutely I do,” he said. “The reason I think I’m going to get it is because I’m the best guy, and it ain’t close. The thing that you have to do, you have to connect with your football team, you have to connect with your fan base. The way they play, that’s the most important thing. Not just the x’s and o’s.”
Rex Ryan Does Not Want Aaron Rodgers As His Quarterback
Ryan is the last coach to take the Jets to the playoffs, having led them to two AFC Championship Games in 2009 and 2010. He remains a fan favorite in New York, with his 96 games and 46 wins the third in franchise history.

Aside from their coaching affairs, the Jets also have to decide what they want to do with quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Ryan, for one, doesn’t see the veteran sticking around next season.
Asked whether that would be the case next season while on ESPN’s ‘NFL Countdown,’ Ryan responded with a terse “No.”
“I think you can let a guy walk out the door when he’s not committed to the team,” he said. “You can’t tell me that hasn’t been the case. This is a guy that wasn’t at mandatory mini camp. Enough said.”
Rodgers might as well begin packing if Ryan gets the job.
