It’s been more than six years since Rex Ryan last coached a game, but the ESPN NFL analyst could soon find himself back in the game.
Ryan coached the New York Jets from 2009 to 2014 and the Buffalo Bills from 2015 to 2016. Ryan was let go with one game to go, and future Los Angeles Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn finished out the last game as interim head coach.
According to a report from Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, the former NFL head coach “has emerged as a top candidate” for the Denver Broncos’ defensive coordinator position.
The Broncos’ defense had a strong performance under first-year defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, but he was let go after the team completed a trade for former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton. Evero then joined Frank Reich’s staff in Carolina to take over as the Panthers’ new defensive coordinator.
Rex’s twin brother, Rob, was the defensive coordinator in New Orleans under Payton from 2013 to 2015. Rob is now a defensive assistant for the Las Vegas Raiders. Rex won a Super Bowl 35 championship ring as the defensive line coach of the Baltimore Ravens back in the 2000 season.
