Reputable sports doctor and consultant Deepak Chona has offered a theory on Damar Hamlin’s collapse on Monday night.
The 24-year-old Buffalo Bills safety was coming off a clash with Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins during the first quarter of the game. All appeared to be fine as he got up on his own, expecting to be part of the next play. However, he fell to the ground just seconds later and would require CPR, as well as a defibrillator.
The Bills have since announced that the player suffered a heart attack, while his family has also put out a statement in which they note he is “fighting.” Hamlin remains in critical condition.
According to Chona, the direct hit to the player’s chest area caused his heart to stop. He noted that there may have been an underlying cardiac issue too.
The medical expert also pointed out that Hamlin could have succumbed to his injury on the field had he not been administered CPR for as long as he had, though the fact that he needed it for nine minutes, plus a defibrillator was very concerning.
