Barring any surprises, it looks like legendary NFL head coach Bill Belichick will not be on the sidelines this upcoming season.
Belichick and the New England Patriots parted ways two weeks ago, following a glorious 24-year run together. Belichick looked poised to become the new head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, but they wound up hiring old friend and ex-Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris for the role instead.
According to a report from Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports, Belichick still hopes to coach in the 2025 season, when he’ll be 73 years of age.
“Crazy as it sounds, Bill Belichick is unlikely to coach in the NFL in the 2024 season. It will be the first time since the 1974 season that Belichick has not been with an NFL team.
But sources tell CBS Sports not to count the GOAT out for 2025. There remains a desire for Belichick to return to the sidelines…he just has to do it on his terms.”
Jones also heard from a source familiar with the legendary head coach that Belichick “was going to be picky”, and that the 71-year-old will want to join a team that gives him he similar team control he had in New England.
Belichick had final say over all roster personnel decisions during his time with the Patriots. He may wish to find that much control with his new team, but that’s unlikely to happen in this day and age.

Ultimately, Belichick will probably have to accept a head coaching position with minimal say on personnel decisions. Otherwise, he won’t find many interested suitors as he prepares for the next chapter of his legendary career.
