Two of the NBA’s most dynamic players and scorers of the 21st century are reportedly in talks to purchase minority ownership stakes in the Buffalo Bills.
The Buffalo Bills, owned by Terry and Tim Pegula for 10 years now, were valued at $4.2 billion by Forbes in August. And according to a new report, three legendary athletes may soon join the Bills’ ownership group.
Eben Novy-Williams and Scott Soshnick of Sportico report that Basketball Hall of Famers Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady, along with American soccer icon Jozy Altidore, are discussing deals to acquire minority stakes in the NFL club:
“Former NBA stars Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady, and former U.S. Soccer star Jozy Altidore, all of whom played in Toronto, are in talks to buy minority stakes in the Buffalo Bills, according to multiple people familiar with the negotiations who were granted anonymity because the details are private.
The club, which is owned by the Pegula family, has been seeking investors. Earlier this year the Bills said they’d hired Allen & Co. to help explore the sale of a non-control stake, which was reported to be around 25%. (The Pegulas separately own the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres, which are not involved).”
Sportico’s report noted that nothing has been finalized, with sources informing them that the investments might not happen after all.
Regarding other big-named athletes in the sports ownership world, retired NFL quarterback Tom Brady is trying to finalize a deal to purchase a minority stake in the Las Vegas Raiders. New York Jets QB Aaron Rodgers has a stake in the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks, and Kansas City Chiefs signal-caller Patrick Mahomes has stakes in the Kansas City Royals and Sporting Kansas City of MLB and MLS, respectively.

The Buffalo Bills have emerged as one of football’s premier teams under the Pegulas, who inherited a club that hadn’t made the postseason since 1999. Under their ownership, Buffalo has reached the postseason six times (2017, 2019, 2020-23) with four straight AFC East division crowns.
Carter, part of the 2024 Basketball Hall of Fame class, played for the Toronto Raptors from 1998 to 2004. McGrady, enshrined in the Hall in 2017, also began his career in “The Six” and played there from 1997 to 2000.
The 34-year-old Altidore played for Toronto FC of Major League Soccer from 2015 to 2021. He also played for the English clubs, Hull City and Sunderland A.F.C.
