One of the most successful NFL head coaches of the 21st century could potentially chose to “walk away” after the season, according to a new report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin just guided his team into the postseason with a 10-7 record despite having to use three different starting QBs throughout the year. As such, Pittsburgh locked down its 20th straight season without a losing record.
Despite Tomlin’s consistency and phenomenal track record in Pittsburgh, however, Schefter reported on Monday that some in the league think Tomlin might choose to “walk away” after the season.
“I don’t know what Mike Tomlin is gonna do, but I can tell you that there are people out there in the league who say that’s potentially an option,” Schefter said during his appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” earlier today. “That after the season, maybe he could walk (away.”
Over his 17 seasons as head coach, Tomlin has compiled a 173-100-2 record. However, the Steelers have been held back by a lack of postseason success since their last trip to the Super Bowl 13 years ago.
Tomlin has gone 8-9 as Pittsburgh’s head coach in the postseason, and they haven’t won a playoff game since the 2016 AFC Divisional Round.

But Tomlin has also been dealt a tough hand since 2018. Le’Veon Bell sat out the entire year with a contract dispute. Antonio Brown quit on his team ahead of their regular season finale that same year. Ben Roethlisberger suffered a season-ending elbow injury in Week 2 of the 2019 campaign and was never the same upon returning.
The Steelers were a rebuilding group in 2022 and still finished 9-8. Even with the QB carousel in Steel City this year, Tomlin squeezed out 10 wins.
Tomlin’s job is likely safe as long as he wants to continue coaching the Steelers. If he steps away, however, there won’t be a shortage of teams interested in hiring the future Hall of Famer.
