Unless Thomas Brown flourishes in his interim role, the Chicago Bears will be looking for a new head coach in the new year.
Last week the Chicago Bears fired head coach Matt Eberflus following disastrous clock management in a heartbreaking Thanksgiving game loss to the NFC North division rival Detroit Lions.
Brown, who went from passing game coordinator to offensive coordinator following Shane Waldron’s firing, was named the interim head coach. The 4-8 Bears visit the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.
One NFL source told Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic proposed that the Chicago Bears take a big swing in their next HC hire by going the trade route.
“It might not be the one they think is the ‘best available,’” the source told Fishbain. “Go get your guy.”
Fishbain threw out the names of San Francisco 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan as well as Sean McVay of the Los Angeles Rams. There’s no indication that the 49ers or Rams would be open to “trading” their offensive mastermind head coaches, but the Chicago Bears also don’t know if they don’t try.

The Chicago Bears have been a head coach graveyard since the controversial call to fire Lovie Smith after a 10-6 season in 2012. Marc Trestman (2013-14), John Fox (2015 to 2017), Matt Nagy (2018 to 2021) and Eberflus (2022 to 2024) all had underwhelming tenures in Chicago.
Chicago Bears Need To Get Their Next HC Choice Right
The Bears have too much talent on both sides of the ball to be mired in mediocrity. Caleb Williams looks like he’ll be the franchise quarterback everyone in Halas Hall envisioned, but they can’t afford to waste another year of his cheap rookie deal.
Chicago made a questionable call to bring in a defensive-minded coach like Eberflus to develop Justin Fields. They need to bring in an accomplished guy like Bill Belichick or Mike Vrabel, or bring in a hot shot candidate and young offensive guru coach like Lions OC Ben Johnson.
