It appears as though former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick will not be starting the next chapter of his legendary career this year.
Many expected Belichick to quickly get scooped up by another NFL team following his departure from the Patriots. But Belichick has only interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons, who wound up hiring ex-Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris for their HC vacancy.
Belichick may not end up getting hired this year, but Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio believes that as many as seven teams could be in on the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach and future Hall of Famer next year:
Teams to watch include (in my own assessment) the Bills, Browns, Jaguars, Giants, Eagles, Vikings, and Buccaneers.
I left off the Cowboys because, if it was ever going to happen, this was the year to do it.
I added the Giants because it’s been long believed he would love to go back to the place where he won a pair of Super Bowls as defensive coordinator, and because the team took a nosedive in 2023 after a playoff berth in 2022.
The Browns are there because owner Jimmy Haslam has a demonstrated capacity to do desperate, impulsive things.
Only the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders still have head coach vacancies, but neither of them have interviewed Belichick. At this point, Belichick’s best bet may be to take a year off and then explore the (many) opportunities that will be on the table in 2025.
