Former New Orleans Saints head coach is widely expected to return to the sidelines for the 2023 season.
With the 2022 regular season set to conclude in two days, several teams will soon relieve their head coaches of duties, so Payton will soon be taking quite a few phone calls.
It has been suggested that Payton will want to join a team that has a top-level quarterback. But during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show”, The Daily Coach’s Michael Lombardi (a former NFL executive) suggested that Payton may care more about the ownership than the quarterback.
Payton announced his resignation from the Saints after the 2021 season, following a successful 16-year run with the organization. Under Payton’s guidance, the Saints won Super Bowl 44 and appeared in three NFC Championship Games.
The Denver Broncos have a head coaching opening after firing Nathaniel Hackett the day after Christmas. The Indianapolis Colts most certainly won’t bring back interim HC Jeff Saturday, who replaced the fired Frank Reich.
The Arizona Cardinals could end up moving on from head coach Kliff Kingsbury, and the Carolina Panthers might end up replacing interim HC Steve Wilks after missing out on the NFC South division title.
