One of the NFL’s top and most well-respected head coaches may walk away after this season.
According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay may end up leaving after this season. The soon-to-be 37-year-old agreed to a contract extension through 2024 back in September:
“Sean McVay’s immediate future as the Los Angeles Rams’ head coach is in limbo, multiple sources told ESPN.
Those sources believe McVay will take some time after Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Seattle Seahawks to determine whether he will return in 2023.
McVay has gone back and forth on the decision and needs time to get away to process all that has transpired over the past year: winning a Super Bowl, being courted to work in television, getting married, watching his wife’s home country of Ukraine invaded, losing his grandfather and then coaching a team that has fallen short of its expectations.”
Schefter’s report added that sources think the injuries to the Rams’ roster “has taken its toll on McVay”. On top of that, sources told Schefter they think the Super Bowl 56 winning head coach “needs time to recharge and to determine whether he has the energy to continue coaching next season.”
McVay was hired to take over as the head coach of the Rams in 2017. Needless to say, it was a franchise-changing move that turned the Rams into one of the NFL’s top organizations. McVay coached the team to five straight winning seasons, three NFC West division titles, a wild card berth, two NFC Championships and a Super Bowl 56 title.
If McVay decides to step away from coaching briefly, it doesn’t necessarily mean he’d be gone for a lengthy period of time.
Bruce Arians retired as the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals after the 2017 season, only to return one year later to coach the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Sean Payton stepped down from his role with the New Orleans Saints last year, but he’s widely expected to return to the NFL coaching world this year.
