The San Francisco 49ers will receive extra third-round draft selections in 2023 and 2024 following the Tennessee Titans’ hiring of Ran Carthon as their new general manager.
Before being hired by the Titans, Carthon worked as the 49ers’ Director of pro personnel, a position he took over in 2017. The Titans’ GM position opened up following the unexpected firing of Jon Robinson back in December.
During the 2020 season, the NFL announced terms that would see teams receive compensatory draft picks if a minority coach or executive was hired by another team for a GM or head coach role:
“Teams that lose a minority coach or executive to a head coach or general manager job with another team will receive a third-round compensatory pick for two consecutive years, per Pelissero. If a team loses a minority coach and an executive to HC and GM roles, that club will receive a third-round compensatory pick for three consecutive years.”
Following a brief playing career, Carthon joined the Atlanta Falcons as a pro scout in 2008. He held that position until 2011 before joining the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams organization, where he served as the Director of player personnel.
The 49ers have been excellent at the draft table under Carthon’s leadership, landing franchise stars like Nick Bosa, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, Fred Warner, Mike McGlinchey and Elijah Mitchell.
Carthon joins a Titans team that is coming off its first losing season since 2016. He’ll have to make several difficult decisions in short time, including what to do with veteran quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

If the Titans move on from Tannehill, Carthon will likely search for a new starting quarterback. Tom Brady, Derek Carr and Jimmy Garoppolo are among the top names who could be available via trade or free agency.
