The San Francisco 49ers have reportedly already decided on who their starting quarterback will be in 2023.
According to a report from Michael Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle, rookie Brock Purdy is expected to be the team’s starting quarterback in 2023. Silver heard from two sources that Purdy “has won” the starting QB battle.
Trey Lance, the No. 3 pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, opened the season as the 49ers’ starting quarterback. Unfortunately, he suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2 which required surgery.
Jimmy Garoppolo, who had served as the 49ers’ main starter from 2017 to 2021, was penciled back into the starting role. Jimmy G, however, suffered a foot injury in the 49ers’ Week 13 home game against the Miami Dolphins. That forced Kyle Shanahan and company to start Purdy for the club’s Week 14 home game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Purdy, the very last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft (“Mr. Irrelevant), was anything but “irrelevant” for the 49ers in the five games he started. The 23-year-old won all five of his starts, completing 67.1 percent of pass attempts for 1,374 yards and 13 touchdowns against four interceptions.
Purdy continued his magic in the NFC Wild Card Round against the archrival Seattle Seahawks, pacing the 49ers to a 41-23 blowout win to get his team back into the Divisional Round. Purdy and the 49ers will host the Dallas Cowboys at Levi’s Stadium this Sunday.

Garoppolo is slated to become a free agent at the end of the season. Given his age, injury history and Purdy’s success, it’s safe to guess that Garoppolo will sign elsewhere in the offseason.
If that’s the case, the 49ers will still have the league’s best quarterback tandem in Purdy and Lance. Should the former lead his 49ers to a Super Bowl championship, there will be absolutely zero doubt about who should start in Week 1 next year.
